Intuitive eating was developed by two registered dietitian nutritionists as an alternative to toxic diet culture. It focuses on taking care of your body rather than starving it, as many diets tend to do. From this revolutionary program branched many other projects, including Health at Every Size® (HAES®), a body acceptance movement developed by our very own UC Davis doctoral graduate, Dr. Lindo Bacon. Intuitive eating and HAES® have been the focus of many research studies which result in increased self-esteem, mental wellness, fruit and veggie intake, and decreased eating disorder behaviors in participants.

Bulletproof coffee is touted as a healthful, energizing morning beverage. In its simplest form it is black coffee with a spoonful of fat, usually butter, coconut oil, and/or MCT oil blended in. The fat is supposed to provide a sense of fullness and a slow release of energy throughout the day. But is this beverage actually healthy and beneficial, or just another food fad? I will look at the dietary guidelines and the types of fat added to bulletproof coffee in order to analyze potential benefits of this drink.

Did you know that your gut has a brain of its own? Okay, it may not be a whole brain, it can’t paint a masterpiece or write an essay for you, but it does respond to your emotions and eating habits. Have you ever felt butterflies in your stomach before a date or interview? Those “butterflies” are your gut-brain responding to your emotions and they have a profound effect on digestion. Your gut, including the intestines, stomach, and esophagus is surrounded by a set of neurons, called the enteric nervous system (ENS), which controls digestion. …

Protein is an important macronutrient, it is the building blocks of our tissues, bones, skin, blood, and so much more. However, the current production of protein is unsustainable and cannot keep up with the quickly growing human population. Carbohydrate and fat has continually been grown as plant sources, but protein has almost exclusively been provided as animal products. It is no wonder why: meat is very nutrient dense, has all essential amino acids, and is very high in protein. Despite the high nutrients meat offers us, animal agriculture is energy inefficient and unsustainable. The population on Earth is increasing every…

We go throughout our day without ever really thinking how we are able to digest our lunch, circulate blood to our tissues, and read this text. To put it much too simply, our bodies are made up of vast networks of cells communicating with one another. However, research has uncovered another species helping us with these bodily tasks: single celled bacteria. There is an entire microbial world living right alongside us with whom we often do not give a second thought. In fact, there are trillions of bacteria living on and in your body right at this moment. A recent…

Artificial food coloring has been a controversial topic for many years. Many people are wary of unnecessary food additives and parents are particularly worried about food dye causing hyperactive behaviors in their children (hyperactive behaviors include constantly moving and fidgeting, being unable to sit still, playing too roughly, losing focus easily, forgetfulness, constant talking, and frequently interrupting others). Some parents have noticed a reduction in these behaviors through cutting artificial food dye out of their children’s diets. I had been wondering if any research studies actually found a relationship, or if this observation was based purely on personal accounts from…
